Camel Selfies in Petra!

Travelling in to Jordan from Israel was an experience in itself (tough border controls!) but the journey was so worth it after the 2 hour drive to Petra, known as the 'Rose City'. This place is incredible!

The highlight was walking through the narrow canyon and coming out to the view of 'The Treasury' which is one of the main sites Petra is known for and the picture that most people recognise. Top Tip - visit Petra either early in the morning or late afternoon as a) it's much cooler but b) you get the amazing yellow/red glow off the sandstone when the sun hits the rock which makes the whole place even more mesmerising!

Being a huge Indiana Jones fan, it was also great to see where they filmed some of the scenes to The Last Crusade!

There are lots of people trying to sell you things as you make your way around the site, particularly camel rides. I took the opportunity to take a few camel selfies, as you can see he was smiling differently in each one, I mean, what a poser!

The other impressive sites for me were the Amphitheatre, Royal Tombs and the Monastery. The whole place is quite fascinating when you walk around and learn the history of the place. You could easily do 2 days here or do a mixture of here and a night in Wadi Rum or 1 night in Petra to ensure you are up early to miss the crowds. Luckily when I went in June 2016 it was relatively quiet. Our guide informed us that Jordanian tourism had been down 50% year on year due to all the conflict in the Middle East which has put people off coming. Such a shame as it's a beautiful place and very welcoming people. I will be back!
