A very British day out!

It was a gorgeous summers day so I thought I would go to the Royal town of Windsor in the county of Berkshire (a few miles west of Heathrow) to have a walk around the town and go to the famous Windsor Castle.

To be fair, you couldn't get more British! The streets are quaint, cobbled alleys with typical Tudor architecture, the town sits on the River Thames and the skyline is dominated by the famous Windsor Castle and Eton College, the private boarding school for boys.

Windsor Castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion of England by William the Conquerer and is now the favoured weekend retreat of the Queen, although i was told she wasn't in residence today (Sunday) as she is opening parliament tomorrow!

After going through a pretty robust security scan, I was free to walk around the grounds. It's pretty amazing to think of all the history that has gone on here! The gardens are well kept although minimal. Unfortunately I couldn't go into St Georges Chapel due to it being a Sunday as a service was taking place. The building itself is pretty impressive and makes a good contrast to the stoney grey castle ramparts.

The admission ticket for an adult is £20 and includes a tour of the State Apartments although you can't take pics in this part! As you would imagine, the rooms are pretty grand and ornate and steeped in history which you learn about as you go around. The big WOW for me was St Georges Hall, it was pretty impressive with the architecture and detail with coats of arms on the ceiling. It's strange to think that this room was destroyed in the great fire of 1992, although they have done a good job restoring it!

If you fancy a very British day out, lots of history, horse drawn carriages, vintage cars and a good spot for afternoon tea, Windsor is the place to go. Quite touristy on a nice day but not overcrowded with lots to see and do! I'm sure Liz would welcome you!
